With one side featuring lightweight 4.5 tog insulation and another featuring a heavier 10.5 tog, this duvet is ideal for couples who need different levels of warmth from their duvets at night.

What is a duvet tog?

You may know roughly what a tog means – lower level tog duvets are lighter than higher level togs, but a tog itself isn’t a measure of weight or density, but rather the measurement of thermal resistance of a duvet.

Depending on the material of your duvet, this may well correspond to the weight of the duvet, but some heavier down duvets - the kind filled with feathers – may have a lower tog level than microfibre-filled duvets that weigh less.

The best way to think about tog rating is in regard to warmth rather than weight.

Tog ratings typically range from 4.5 to 15. In our list, we’ve included duvets across that range: 4.5 tog duvets that are better for warmer months and 15 tog duvets more suited to colder nights.

What tog duvet is right for me?

Choosing the right tog duvet for you will depend on one simple factor: how hot are you when you sleep?

If you’re experiencing night sweats, menopause symptoms, or are simply someone who gets hot while you sleep, a lighter tog - somewhere around a 4.5 or 7.5 tog, might be the best option for you. Lighter tog duvets are also great for keeping on hand for use during hot summer nights.

If you’re someone who neither sleeps hot nor cold and is looking for a duvet that will suit you year-round, a 10.5 tog duvet is considered the best option for year-round comfort.

However, if you feel the cold, live in a year-round cold weather area, or are looking for a duvet that will help you keep warm at night without having to turn the heating on, a heavier tog rating of 13.5 of 15 would be your best bet.

What’s the best duvet tog rating for a child or toddler?

There are some key considerations you need to make when choosing a new duvet for your child, as toddlers and children can’t regulate their body temperature as effectively as adults can. This means that choosing unsuitable bedding runs the risk of overheating when sleeping.

The key things to consider are the age of your child, room temperature, and size of the bed. For children over the age of 3, sleeping in a room with an average overnight temperature of 18°C-20°C, a duvet with a tog rating of 4.5 is suitable. In winter, you may want to swap this for a duvet with a 7 tog rating.

If your child is under 12 months, it’s best to avoid duvets, quilts or other heavier bedding. Instead, stick to a baby sleeping bag or blanket. For children aged over 12 months but under three years, opt for a lightweight duvet of no more than 4 togs.
